Life in COVID with Ms. Seigonie Mohammed Event Report

Date: October 24, 2020
Time: 3:30PM – 5:00PM
Place: Google Meet

Purpose of event:

Due to the current pandemic, all previously planned Youth Council events were abruptly cancelled. As a result, the Council decided to host a series of virtual events.

“Life in COVID” was designed as a motivational talk session with the intention of motivating young persons to continue to persevere during the pandemic.

Summary of event:

On October 24, 2020, the Council hosted an online motivational talk session, with guest speaker, Ms. Seigonie Mohammed. The event was open to persons aged eighteen (18) years and over and was streamed through the Council’s Google Meet forum. The event was scheduled from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The turnout for the event was satisfactory, with a total of twenty-six (26) persons from across the diocese being in attendance.

As persons logged into the event, they were met with familiar gospel songs as they waited for everyone to join. The event began with an opening prayer, followed by a brief introduction of the Council. This was then followed by two scripture readings and a short biography of Ms. Mohammed.

Ms. Mohammed then spoke for about 30 minutes on the topic for the evening, “Life in COVID”, and centred on the sub-theme of determination and persistence. Ms. Mohammed reminded those in attendance about the value of enduring despite the various situations we may face in our daily life. She explained that, even in these times, whatever we do, we should do it to the best of our ability, believing and knowing that God is at the forefront of every trial we face. Ms. Mohammed also emphasised the need to adapt to change and to view it as a form of self-progress. She underscored that although situations may be uncomfortable at times, there is a purpose to be found within them, and that we should search for the deeper meaning to be found in such scenarios.

After Ms. Mohammed’s presentation, the event closed with a vote of thanks, followed by prayer and reading. Music was played as persons left the event.

Challenges:

  • Internet connection: some persons were unable to maintain their connection to the session on various occasions
  • Advertising: this was only done in earnest about a week before the event and ideally should have been done at least two weeks in advance.
