REVEREND Carl Williams, Anglican priest at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, is warning citizens to not make rash judgements against those who are perceived to be wrong.

Speaking with the Newsday yesterday after the Strolling Players Theatre Company’s 60th anniversary and thanksgiving service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain, Williams said he was not speaking on behalf of the Anglican Church.

He said he has his own opinion about the imbroglio over the appointment of former chief magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar as a High Court judge and her resignation a few days later, and the demand for Chief Justice Ivor Archie to step down as attorneys moved a no-confidence motion against him on Thursday last.

Archie is the chairman of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (JLSC) the body responsible for appointing judges.

“The judiciary is a very important arm of the institution of Trinidad and Tobago,” Williams said. “As you know, justice is first for God, even more so than our praise, therefore justice must be seen to be done in TT.

“What I’m hearing is really not good because you have persons who are sitting in jail for a long time awaiting trial.

I don’t know what caused the genesis of that, but it is something that we have to look at.

“We have to be very careful because we have two persons of impeccable character. You could not have been chosen as the chief magistrate or chief justice unless you had impeccable character and qualified yourself among many others. Let us be careful how we go about condemning people, asking them to resign.”
