What an achievement! After many years of planning, the Anglican Shoppe is now a reality!
The Anglican Shoppe was opened upstairs JTA Grocery store in the Couva Shopping Centre had it’s Grand Opening on Monday 4/4/2022 at 11:00 am. We were very thankful that The Vicar General , Archdeacon Edwin Primus was able to come and bless the Shoppe. In attendance were Ms. Jennifer Frederick, Ms Petal- Dawn Hinkson, Ms. Pamela Redhead and Mr.Anthony Mohammed from the Planning Committee along with Ms. Cislyn Humphrey, Carolyn Humphrey- Marcelle, Ms. Ingrid Tenia and Ms Patricia Carrabon- Smith all who worked feverishly to get the project off the ground in three weeks.
The event was a success. We reached our sales goal for the day and the week. Overall, the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, with 100 percent of participants commenting favourably on the applicable use of the space and the positive experience.
Shout out to our first official customers Ms. Joan Leach and Ms. Ann Marie McDonald both from St. Sylvan Parish. The Blessings did not stop there as Ms Edselle, Chairperson of The Mothers’ Union branch in St. Andrew’s Parish in Couva came in with her grandsons Tyreek and Tyrelle to add to the road of success!
This Shoppe has been a long time in the making and is a destination for the Anglican community and the general community to purchase their religious and gift items. A place in central Trinidad that would help alleviate the trek to Port of Spain or even Mount St. Benedict to get that must have item.
Sales have been steady with Friday being the busiest day so far. The days leading up to Easter have been very fruitful as various clergy came for their must have items like Pascal candles, wounds and charcoal. But rest assured that the store offers a variety of items. Inspirational cups, plaques, bags and bookmarks are just a few items that have caught shoppers’ eyes and caused them to dig into their pockets.
The Shoppe also carries Vestments, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts and gift baskets, Confirmation must haves, Teacher’s items, inspirational books, hymnals, book of common prayer, baptismal candles, wedding candles, Anglican rosary along with Catholic rosary just to name a few.
Having a proper balance of religious items and gift items, sourcing items and shortage of available inventory posed a hurdle at first. However, as the team surveyed parishioners again, that setback was somewhat abated. Keeping a log of customers’ requests have proven to be very helpful.
The income and expenses of the event provide important context for future planning. Unexpected costs are common, but documentation has provided details that will guide future planning and purchases. We are very optimistic about the future of the Anglican Shoppe. Persons have already reached out for a branch in the Tobago region. Getting the right sourcing and optimal place will make an expansion very fruitful for the Diocese.
